Surging energy demands of AI data centers are placing significant strain on America’s power grid. The AI industry’s electricity consumption is projected to grow dramatically, potentially increasing from 3% to as much as 99% of total U.S. electricity generation. Forecasts indicating a need for an additional 29 gigawatts of power by 2027 and 67gigawatts by 2030 to support AI infrastructure. This unprecedented demand risks overwhelming the current grid capacity, necessitating rapid expansion of energy production to prevent shortages and maintain grid reliability, which could otherwise hinder U.S. AI development and global competitiveness.
